Cruise-line profile
Avalon Waterways in France
Avalon Waterways currently markets French river cruising on the Seine, the Rhône and the Garonne, and publishes two combined programmes that stitch those regions together.
Best for Travellers optimising for how much is included ashore, and for bikes already on board. Checked 5 September 2026 Sources 1–6
Our verdict
Shortlist Avalon if the number of things included ashore is what you are optimising for. Its general positioning publishes up to 28 included excursions per cruise and an Adventure Center carrying complimentary bikes, e-bikes, maps and gear — and its Seine programme is unusually explicit that the Normandy landing beaches are an excursion option rather than somewhere the ship goes.
At a glance
Only what Avalon Waterways publishes, with a numbered reference to the page each statement came from.
- French rivers and regions
- The Seine, the Rhône and the Garonne.1
- Representative itineraries
- Four of them here: Paris to Normandy, Burgundy & Provence, the fifteen-day Grand France, and France, Uncorked.2345
- Inclusion model
- Avalon’s general positioning publishes up to 28 included excursions per cruise. That is a brand-level statement, not a count for any one France sailing.6
- Excursion approach
- Choice is written into the published day: the Seine programme sets out Giverny or Bizy at Vernon, and the Normandy Landing Beaches as an option.26
- Active options
- The published Adventure Center carries complimentary bikes, e-bikes, maps and gear.6
What to ask before you book
Nothing Avalon Waterways publishes settles these, so they are not excluded, they are unanswered. Put them to the operator.
- Ships listed for France
- Not established. The Avalon France pages we read do not name a vessel, so this profile names none.
- Drinks
- Not established for these France programmes. We have not found anything Avalon publishes that settles it, and we will not read another operator’s practice onto this one.
- Wi-Fi
- Not established for these France programmes.
- Gratuities
- Not established for these France programmes.

The case for, and the case against
What it does well on French rivers
-
The choice is written into the day
On Paris to Normandy, Vernon is published with a choice between Giverny and Bizy, and the Normandy Landing Beaches appear as an excursion option rather than as a promised stop. That is an unusually honest way to publish a Seine week, and it matches the geography.2
-
Bikes are part of the ship, not an extra
The published Adventure Center carries complimentary bicycles, e-bikes, maps and gear. It is a brand-level statement, but it is a specific one.6
-
Two ways to see more than one region
Grand France is published as fifteen days from Paris to Arles in the current 2027 programme, joining the Seine to the Saône and Rhône by a train transfer between cruise segments. France, Uncorked is published as a combined Rhône, Seine and Bordeaux itinerary.45
-
Named places, not adjectives
The current Seine narrative names Vernon and Rouen; the current Burgundy & Provence narrative names Arles, Avignon, Tournon and Lyon. A place name is checkable in a way that “charming villages” is not.23
Tradeoffs and limits
-
28 is a ceiling, not a count for your week
“Up to 28 included excursions” is brand positioning. It does not tell you how many are included on the eight-day Seine programme, and we are not going to divide one number into the other to invent an answer.6
-
No ship is named for France here
The Avalon France pages we read do not name the vessel. If ship class, cabin layout or the window arrangement matters to you, that is a question to settle before booking rather than after.
-
Three inclusion rows are blank
Drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities are three of the rows most people use to normalise one fare against another, and this profile publishes nothing for any of them. That is a gap in what we could source, not a statement that the items are excluded.
-
Burgundy & Provence runs northbound on the page we read
The current programme is published Arles to Lyon. One-way itineraries change your flights, and direction can change between seasons — check it on the departure you are pricing.3
Representative France programmes
The programmes we could verify against Avalon Waterways’s own pages, rather than everything the line sells. Durations are printed in the unit the operator uses, because days and nights are not interchangeable.
These are published itineraries, not live departures. Check current dates, fares and availability with the operator.
Before you settle on this one
One honest alternative. Compare it with Uniworld, which publishes bicycles and Nordic walking sticks inside an all-inclusive positioning that also covers gratuities and premium drinks.
Where two lines are genuinely close on a French river, and on the Seine and at Bordeaux several of them are, we say they are close rather than manufacturing a winner.
The order that works, in our experience, is: pick the river, decide how you want the day ashore arranged, then normalise two fares against the same list of inclusions before you look at either headline number. Availability in the month you can travel usually makes the final call anyway.
The rivers this line publishes for
Each guide sets out what that region is for, when we would sail it and which other operators publish there.
